Case Management allows us to counsel parents with children under the age of six on how to reduce the risk of lead hazards. The Community Health Educator offers education on the causes and effects of lead poisoning. Each family is provided with fact sheets, brochures and pamphlets in order to increase their awareness about lead poisoning. This educates families about key sources of lead exposures and how to reduce them, the Massachusetts Lead Law, renovating safely, the importance of a well-balanced diet and lead screening. The Health Educator also initiates support services and referrals to a variety of social services agencies as needed. Community Health Educators assess factors that may impact the child’s blood lead level (including sources of lead, nutrition, access to services (i.e. Early Intervention, WIC, and Head Start) family interaction and caregiver understanding. Health Educators ensure coordination of long-term services and retesting.
