Head Start’s educational philosophy holds that children learn best in a caring, nurturing environment in which they are able to explore freely and securely. We believe that each child needs to interact with his/her environment, according to his/her own abilities, to explore, discover, and learn through play with an emphasis in language and overall literacy development. Children need to practice making choices and solving problems – skills they will use all through life. Showing respect for each child’s ethnic background, as well as emphasizing social competence in mainstream United States culture, remain important goals for the program based on our community needs. The program goals are to maintain bilingualism while maintaining both languages at home as well as in the classroom.
The role of teaching staff is to facilitate learning and exploration and to encourage and support each child’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth. Staff working with the infant and toddlers, plan curriculum that focuses on relationships, respect, and responsiveness to the development of the very young child. In all Early Care Education the emphasis of English in literacy and language development are critical. Over 90% of the children served upon enrollment are non-English speaking.
