Biography
Born, raised and educated in Lawrence, Maureen Mulcahy began her career at GLCAC, Inc. as a teenager with a summer job in 1965. That summer job evolved into a 35-year career with Head Start, during which she moved up the ranks until she was appointed Head Start Director in 1985. During her years as Head Start Director, Maureen ran a program that emphasized respect for each family's cultural and ethnic background, while strengthening the family's social competence in mainstream US culture. One of her important contributions to the program was expanding the role and involvement of parents in the program. Maureen's career at GLCAC began with a small, fledgling program which expanded to seven sites throughout the Greater Lawrence area. In January 2001, Maureen moved into GLCAC, Inc. administration, to take on the role of Director of Planning and Program Development.
In addition to extensive work commitments, Maureen has raised two children, cared for an elderly parent, and also found time for volunteer work, teaching weekly religious classes for 13 years and coaching a girls softball team for 5 years.
